“It’s not like you’re going live here long enough. I glanced at my watch. Three and a half dias, you freaky angel, and you’re going home.”

Her crazed expression cleared and her wings finally relaxed. “Oh, right.”

“Glad you remembered. Your new job is to clean this wreck. I’ve got to make more repairs.”

Chapter 21

MALANI

Tahnya rubbed the last of my dreads between her palms. Loose hairs were caught and bound. Breaker’s apartment didn’t have much in natural light, especially this late in the dia, but Tahnya managed. I sat at the table, ankles locked around the legs to anchor me. Outside, sounds of revelry drifted in—laughter, music, clicking of utensils.

“Why is your hair white and your eyebrows dark?” She scooped a handful of the dreads and piled them onto my head, threading one of the strands with one of her own bigger beads.

I shrugged and focused on the perfect sheet lines of Breaker's cot, then on the wadded mess I left on his bed.

Actually, I did know. I certainly wasn’t going to explain Elik secrets to a Human.

I mentally kicked myself.

I forgot. I was Human. Breaker, too, who had been nothing but sweet flowers kind lately. I focused again on his bed and rumpled sheets. He tried so hard to be nice, most of the time. For him, I could at least try to be neater.

Tahnya stepped across the room and gave my hair a final examination before pinning the last dreads. “There. You look lovely. I guess it’s hard for you not to look lovely, so I tried to make you look good, though not too good.” She nibbled the edge of her lip, not quite meeting my eyes. “Not that I didn’t try to make you look good, because you do, but you already stand out so I tried to not make you stand out too much because you already stand out because of your wings.” Her hands twirled with nerves.
